Region I Presidents Cup Schedule Updated

Region I Champions League Playoff and Season Concluded

The Region I Champions League playoffs were held May 9 and 10 at Kirkwood Soccer Complex with champions being crowned in six boys and girls age groups.  Teams from ten different clubs and six different state associations claimed a Champions League title and earned an automatic berth in the Region I Championships.

Two clubs had multiple winners. Baltimore Celtic (MD) grabbed the U13 and U17 Boys titles and Beadling’s (PAW) U16 and U18 Girls crowns. Other winners included South Shore Select (MA), McLean (VA), Century V (PAW), Dix Hills (ENY), FC Virginia (VA), Loudon (VA), NJ Stallions (NJ), and Smithtown (ENY).

The Champions League is Region I’s new regional league for the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic and New England States.  League champions earn automatic berths in the Region I Championships and the two finalists qualify for the prestigious US Youth Soccer National League.

Region 1 Boys ODP International Tour Successes

The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) Boys Region I 2001 team recently completed a trip to Italy to participate in the Piccole Grandi Squadre Tournament. Region I netted a top-four finish in a tournament that featured 36 teams with European youth national teams, as well as academy teams from prestigious clubs in Italy among the field. The 2000 and 1999 Region 1 Boys ODP teams just returned from successful tournament play in Italy and Spain respectively. 

2000’s

The 2000 claimed 3rd place in the Citta Di Porino Tourino” with a 1-0 win over Gothenburg of Sweden.  The team narrowly missed playing in the final as they tied Toronto FC Academy 1-1 in the semis. Toronto advanced on PKs. Vojvodina of Serbia won the tournament with a 1-0 victory over TFC.  The tournament MVP was given to Region 1’s Andrew Rodgers from Virginia  who led Region 1 to a 3-1-1 record. 

1999’s

The 99 team finished in the top 8 out of 52 in the MIC Cup in Barcelona.  In the quarterfinals Region 1 lost to the eventual champion Aspire Academy. Aspire is part of the academy system being funded to develop and find players for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.  Former US National Coach Bora Milutinovic was there as a consultant to Aspire. 

The 99s lost their opening match against Girona of Spain and then won 4 straight before the quarter final defeat.  Matt Sloan of E NY and Seraphen Ira du kunda of VT lead the team with 2 goals each in the tournament as the team went 4-2 overall. 

Upcoming

The U-14; 17 and 18 teams will be heading to Italy, Germany and France to round out the international tour portion of Region 1’s Olympic Development Program. 


U11/U12 GODP Academy Camp- 6/12/15-6/14/15

The GODP U11/U12 Academy weekend scheduled for June in Hershey, PA has been cancelled.
