*Our
philosophy for our European trip is to choose players from our top three or
four age groups. We select the best players from our U19, U17, U16 and
sometimes our U15 pools. We then travel with a “select” team from our region.
This allows older players to mentor younger players and most players get a
great experience playing “up” an age group.
We
arrived in
We
had a brief sightseeing tour in the morning and then our first game in the
afternoon versus Duisberg. We played on a very small field and the players
received the first taste of what home field advantage can mean. We scored a goal
from midfield to tie the score 2-2 late in the second half. The referee
disallowed the goal but would not give a reason why. We decided to count the
goal so we believe our first game was tied 2-2 even though there is a referee
somewhere in Duisberg who may disagree.

This
morning we met as a team to do a post game meeting from the night before and to
set some team goals for the week. We allowed them to set their team goals on
their own as a group. Before leaving them to their task, we talked about the
following:
1.
Savor the Experience, You must have goals!
2.
Improve every time you step on the field. You cannot just show up for events,
you must be engaged each time you step on the field. Prioritize your
commitments and time so you can be at your best for each event. You must train
your body to give 100% mentally and physically each time you come to play. Make
it a habit. Every player wants to make it to the next level. Very few are
actually willing to do what it takes to get there.
3.
Have more urgency, have an Attitude when you play.

Once
we started to execute it was evident that the Braakenhausen team was
overmatched. This was a good lesson in playing in the final third and not
running offside.
This
morning we went on a short tour of
Our
next game gave us a tremendous puzzle. We were much more athletic, faster, fitter and overall had more strength, quickness and agility.
The Badnausen team was much older, not fit, not athletic but played much
smarter. It was a great game for our players to match wits rather than muscles.

Today
was our last game and our best game. We had a very spirited competition and
both teams played well. We won the game in the final two minutes but more
importantly we started to see some earlier lessons learned come through in this
game. We had much more urgency in our attacking attitude. We possessed the ball
much better. We defended much tougher and much harder.
We had a wonderful reception afterward where
both teams mingled and shared gifts. It was a great experience.
