Region I 1987’s Crowned L’Etoile de Menton Champions

Avenging a preliminary loss earlier in the tournament, Region I defeated Standard de Liege of Belgium by a score of 2-0 in the Finals of the 33rd Tournoi International de Futball Feminin held in Menton, France.

The scoring began early in the first half as Region I immediately put the opposition on their heels when at the 8th minute Ashley Meyers received a slot pass from B.C. Redmond to put the Americans up 1-0. As an immediate response, Standard de Liege attempted to breakdown the defensive unit by throwing numbers forward and taking every shot they could muster trying to equalize by halftime. However, through strong play of the back four (Nikki Moore, Jen Om, Kerri McNicholas and Sarah Senty) combined with some fantastic saves from Defensive Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper Erin Guthrie there was no equalizer to be had and Region I took a 1-0 halftime lead into the locker room.

Entering the second half, Region I was anticipated the changes that the Belgium women would make and made some adjustments of their own. This approach took Standard de Liege by surprise when just 3 minutes into the second half, a corner was earned and on a loose ball Sarah Peteraf found Jessica Hermann at the top of the 18 yard box and the Belgium squad found themselves down 2-0. Truly, Standard de Liege found themselves in a predicament and despite attempts to generate a goal Region I battled and employed solid game management tactics to earn the Championship Trophy.

As the match came to a close, a standing ovation was given from the few hundred spectators on the quality of play and maturity demonstrated throughout the entire event by both teams.
