US Youth Soccer today announced the schedule for the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Boys New Year’s Interregional in Carson, California from January 13-15, 2006 at the Home Depot Center. The annual event brings together the four US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Regional Teams for player development, competition and identification.
Many of those invited to the New Year’s Interregional bring U.S. National Team experience as well as an extensive list of accomplishments. Fourteen are 2005 NSCAA/adidas Boys Youth All-Americans including Mark Wiltse (NJ) who was also a 2005 adidas ESP Team Champion and ESP West All Star. In addition to the nine 2005 adidas ESP All Stars, players such as Richard Edger (MD), bring recent U.S. U17 Men’s Residency experience to Carson.
The 2006 adidas MLS Player Combine is also taking place at the Home Depot Center and will consist of games played on the mornings of January 13, 14 and 15 in preparation for the 2006 MLS SuperDraft held on Friday, January 20, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pa. In addition to the annual training and competition at the US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Interregional, this group of US Youth Soccer ODP players will have the opportunity to be evaluated by the coaching staffs and general managers from all twelve MLS teams.
"US Youth Soccer ODP continues to provide players the platform to experience the nation’s premier player development and identification opportunities in the country", said Bob Bounpane, US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Committee Chairman. "For those players aspiring to play at the next level, our program provides the proven framework, results and history as the leader in elite player development."
Teams will arrive on January 12th for training. Play is scheduled to begin on January 13th at the conclusion of the Player Combine and continue daily through January 15.
How important is the US Youth Soccer ODP? Just ask the current and former U.S. U17 Men's National Team Head Coaches.
"We use the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program because it produces excellent players and it does a great deal of our work for us," said John Hackworth, Under-17 Men's National Team Head Coach. "Players develop through the US Youth Soccer ODP process by continually being placed in a more competitive environment. The Under-17 Men's National Team has always and will continue to evaluate players through US Youth Soccer ODP."
"I can assure you that my staff and I utilized US Youth Soccer ODP to the best of our ability," said John Ellinger, former Head Coach, Under-17 U.S. Soccer Men's National Team. "Players develop through the US Youth Soccer ODP process by continually being placed in a more competitive environment. The experience of testing their individual skills and abilities at higher levels is paramount in their developmental process. For coaches, evaluating and selecting players for the National Team programs, the chance to see them in these types of competitive environments is a key factor."
This event is one of the many events offered to players who compete in the US Youth Soccer ODP Program. The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.
