Boys ODP Thanksgiving Interregional Event

Report on the 1987's

The Region 1 1987 Boys ODP team played three games at the Thanksgiving Interegional which was held in Austin, Texas.

They won their first game against Region 3 by a score of 3 to 1. The scoring started when Mike Grella was fouled in the box at the 7th minute. He then converted the PK. Thirteen minutes later Grella scored again with a free kick from approximately 25 yards out. He put the ball over the wall and into the upper left hand corner out of the reach of the Region 3 keeper. Four minutes later Kevin Mesa scored and Eric Hort, the captain, was credited with an assist. Region 3 scored their lone goal in the 31st minute.

The second game versus Region 4 started off quickly with some first minute action. There was a pass from Tremaine Chinapoo to Eric Hort who crossed it into the box where Mike Grella volleyed the ball past the keeper for a goal. Unfortunately for Region 1 that was the extent of their scoring for the match. Region 4 answered with a goal in the 27th minute and another off a corner in the 55th minute giving them a 2 to 1 victory.

The third game of the weekend pitted Region 1 against Region 2. After a quiet first half Region 2 scored first in the 55th minute. Region 1 answered back with a goal in the 60th minute by Doug Rodkey with an assist from Alex Grendi. In the 67th minute Mike Grella scored another goal assisted by Justin Flood. Mike Grella then capped off the weekend with another goal in the 69th minute giving Region 1 a 3 to 1 victory.

In the three games the 1987 Region 1 team scored 7 goals and gave up 4. Mike Grella scored 5 times, Kevin Mesa and Doug Rodkey one each. Coaches Tommy Lang and Dean Foti were particulary pleased with the outstanding play of Mike Konicoff, Pavelid Costenada and Mike Grella.
